As in the preceding painting, here too Pascucci deals with a complex articulation of light which cuts partially through a dark space: around a table set for a simple meal are gathered the adults and children of a family, sunk into an atmosphere of heavy silence. The sadness emanating from the group is explained by the title, since these poor peasants’ only resource is now gone. The canvas won the silver medal in 1909 at the first National Fine Arts Exhibition in Rimini.
