This oil sketch for The Apostles already clearly indicates the final composition, luminous and rhythmic, but the faces are mere quick touches of the brush; they would later be the object of detailed study, like the portrait of Niccolai. Pascucci presents his fellow townsmen in one of the most important religious ceremonies of the liturgical year. All are wearing the white robes of confraternity brothers and sit next to each other, composed and still, awaiting the arrival of the priest, when their own personal brief moment of protagonism will begin, in a solemn, dignified presentation that immediately afterwards, once the celebrant has passed, will fall apart in an irreverent scramble to find their socks and shoes.
