Pieter de Molijn (London 1595 – Haarlem 1661)
Landscape with Village, Peasants, and Wayfarers
Oil on canvas, 96.5 x 142.5 cm
Signed at lower left PMolijn [initials joined together] 1656
In the contrast between the solid depiction of the foreground, the less well-defined horizon and the large space allotted to the sky, set in the dunes of Haarlem like so many of Pieter Molijn’s works, the artist offers a poetic vision of the world and of the effort involved in reaching the goals people set for themselves.
