Willem van Nieulandt the Younger (Antwerp 1584 – Amsterdam 1635)
Rest on the Flight into Egypt, with the Temple of Hercules Victor at the Forum Boarium in Rome
Oil on wood, 38 x 49.5 cm
The subject is an ancient monument which the painter, who was in Rome between 1601 and 1604, frames in an ideal view of the city, suspended between past and present. The Flight into Egypt may be connected with the title of Santa Maria Egiziaca (Saint Mary of Egypt) assigned to the church which the nearby Temple of Portunus became.
