Manciano, Collection of the City of Manciano
On the back of the painting’s original stretcher was written “Carnival scene,” while in 1934 the work was presented as Carnival Revelry at the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno to compete for the Ussi prizes. Faithful to the realistic language which made the people of Manciano his preferred models, Pascuci paints here, using sketches made from life, a festive scene showing the musicians of the town band, but also a guitarist performing in the centre of the room. He is being drawn by a girl seen from behind, next to whom are two young men, one of them wearing a showy ladies’ hat. The entire room reverberates with light, good humour, and affectionate warmth as they celebrate the noble arts of music, painting and theatre in a simple family environment.
