Winter Landscape
Oil on canvas, 72 x 102 cm
The seventeenth century saw the flourishing rise in Holland of the winter landscape genre, well represented by this painting which, above and beyond the individual figurative elements typical of this artist’s repertory, evidences his vocation for the atmospheric rendering of the grey Dutch winter, achieved through the use of a soft, loose application of the paint, using shades of colour ranging from white to grey, brightened by the pink tones of the sky opening up towards the horizon through the dense cloud cover.
