Abel Grimmer (Antwerp 1570-1619), attributed
Winter Scene
oil on wood, 30 cm diameter (roundel)
The clear colours and emphatically geometric structure of the landscape suggest attribution of this roundel to Abel Grimmer who, following in the wake of his father Jacob, was inspired by the close, caustic observation of human reality characteristic of Pieter Brueghel the Elder, softened however by his pleasure in representing rollicking peasant life.
