Grosseto, Collection of the Province of Grosseto
The personage shown here, a Parliamentary Deputy and the first president of the Provincial Council, was well known and highly respected in early twentieth-century Grosseto. His characteristic severe physiognomy, captured by Pascucci with attentive realism, enabled his identification as the subject also of a portrait painted by Pietro Aldi in 1885, present in the Polo’s collection from its earliest formation but until now indicated generically Portrait of a Gentleman. Ciro Aldi Mai was Pietro Aldi’s cousin and the husband of Apollonia Cinotti, portrayed by Pietro in the large painting of 1876 which is also present in the Polo, among the works generously on loan from the Cannucciari antique dealers in Orviero.
